15 Tips to Trap a Timid Stray Dog Who Needs Your Help and Home

The business of catching a canine who is scared of the world is not an easy one. So-called pawfessionals in this field are often very heavy handed and not responsible for the rehabilitation of the dog and so do not care all too much for the meaning of their methods. Leaving the situation to be that dogs are left terrified and with a lot of work to do to return to normal behavior. But as people who love dogs, we know you do not want to do that to a pupper and so if you find yourself in a situation where you need to save a scared dog, these suggestions should hopefully help you find the heartwarming ending you have been looking for.

With the many topics discussed on Reddit's r/DOG subreddit we were actually little surprised to find a thread that discussed what to do with one of the more frustrating situations that dog people get into. We are of course talking about the moment that you cross paths with a poor pupper who looks deathly afraid of the world around them and in need of help. But their fear holds them back. There is no treat, toy or temptation that can cause them to instantly trust and come along with you. Meaning that you now need to build a rapport and trust with this pupper to win their heart.

But doing so can be quite the tough task and so to help you along your journey we brought together these priceless pawrent suggestions to help you the next time you need to show a dog how much you care about them.     ednasmom In addition to what other people have said, high reward treats and a baby voice. When I worked with scared fosters they warmed up to me much faster when I used a baby voice.

  • Well, this is certainly interesting. While the other suggestions so far are mainly centred around gaining trust and reducing intimidation this suggestion adds a whole new element to your pupper catching arsenal. By using that baby voice you are likely tapping into either frequencies that are more calming for canines to respond to or sounds that they are familiar with from their childhood. The sounds they grew up alongside as their littermates vied for mom’s attention. This is such a clever communication technique and one which could uniquely speed up the trust building process.

    buburocks Dont try to quickly grab him as it will scare him! Keep gaining his trust, be very gentle and soft spoken. Try using hotdog slices or bacon, things thatll really perk up his nose. If he eventually lets you pet him. while he's eating without jumping back, youll know youre getting somewhere

  • As many dating coaches suggest, being implacable is one of the best ways to build trust and familiarity. Just being there, regardless of reason or interaction is more than enough to slowly build these trusting relationships. And while it might not exactly be true for hoomans, for dogs it is more than legitimate. You know, so long as you come with chill vibes and maybe a little food and not loud music and madness. So if all else fails at least being there is enough to make some sort of headway,

    ShaunaLenz I'm far from an expert... but there is a guy on Youtube who has a series called "Sitting with dogs" Rocky Kanata.. he works at a shelter and likes to make strays feel better when they arrive... lotsa the stuff he does would likely work for you

    BadFish918 I caught a stray like this by using one of those choke leashes that self tighten. It took a while and a few tries, but I was able to lasso the dog finally. Put down something delicious and make a big loop. When the dog is in its most vulnerable state focused on the food, make your move. Hang on tight and be careful.

    KindheartednessOnly4 Taco Bell. I caught a completely wild stray with Taco Bell. It took a few days but eventually I had her inside the house sleeping on the rug. Got her fixed and found her a home after that. Good luck!
